EDEN hosts World Congress of Dermato-Epidemiology in Nottingham

BEES and EDEN were very proud to host the 5th International Congress on Dermato-Epidemiology under the auspices of the International Dermato-Epidemiology Association, 7th-9th September 2008.

The Congress was held on the green hills of the University of Nottingham campus, with lectures and talks held in the Sir Clive Granger building. Over 50 abstracts were received and delegates from all over the world were present, including a strong presence of colleagues from the American Dermato-Epidemology Network and the European Dermato-Epidemology Network.

Key note speakers included Professor Rod Hay who is leading the WHO Global Burden of Disease project, Professor Alan Tennant from the University of Leeds who gave a superb talk on quality of life measures, Professor Dave Whynes who clarified issues on the economic costs of disease, and Professor Rob Stern who gave the Paolo Carli lecture dealing with the safety of dermatological treatments. The BEES guest lecture was given by Nobel prize winner Sir Peter Mansfield, who talked about the early development of magnetic resonance imaging.

To give delegates a flavour of Nottingham, the official Robin Hood for Nottingham, Mr Tony Rotherham, gave an excellent demonstration of weapons used in medieval days and arrived dressed in full period costume.
He was accompanied by Maid Marian of course, and was quick to dispel many of the myths surrounding the Robin Hood stories.

Another highlight of the meeting was presentation of a carved apple from Sherwood Forest, along with a copy of the 2nd edition of Evidence Based Dermatology to the most outstanding oral presentation. This was presented by the Sheriff of Nottingham, Councillor Brian Grocock. The winner of the award was Dr Christian Apfelbacher from Germany.
